Shimmering, pale green peridot–often called the evening emerald–is a gemstone commonly associated with spirituality and expression. The word “peridot” can be pronounced as “PAIR-uh-doe” or “PAIR-uh-dot.”
It is the national gem of Egypt, and the ancient Egyptians knew it as the gem of the sun. Ancient Egyptians mined peridot on the Red Sea island of Zabargad, the source for many large fine peridots in the world’s museums.
Peridot is rich in magnesium and has an iron content that gives the gem its green coloring.
Gem variety of the mineral olivine: found in peridotite rock from the earth’s upper mantle.
